A half bath and a powder room are technically the same thing – a bathroom with a toilet and a sink, sink, a toilet (and no shower or tub). Some people just use one term over the other. If there was a difference, it would be that powder rooms are more decorated than a half bathroom.
In some bathroom remodeling projects, its pretty common to only need a tub or shower surround replacement, and the rest of the bathroom (the vanity, floor, mirror, lighting) is all left in its existing condition. In these scenerios it is usually the case that a tub needs to be replaced, or the shower needs to be replaced.
These 2 following images show a project where the project scope was just replacing the tub. We demolished the old walk-in jacuzzi tub, ran new plumbing, installed a river rock style tile floor, added wainscoting to the walls, and installed a free standing tub.
Many of our shower replacement projects are needed because the shower surround was not installed properly originally and the shower has begun leaking. Reasons showers begin leaking are commonly: the wrong backer board was used (such as regular drwyall instead of cement board), caulk has failed and water has been getting behind the shower wall, grout was not sealed and has deteriorated and water is able to pass behind the shower tile, and we often see that the shower wall backer did not have a waterproofing membrane installed.
Sometimes a customer’s bathroom remodeling project is based around just needing to replace the tub. However, unless the tub is a freestanding tub, in order to remove the tub you have to remove about 12 inches of the shower surround above the tub, which usually makes the tub replacement grow into a full tub and shower surround replacement.
Replacing the existing cast iron with new PVC plumbing wasn’t needed for the project, but while we have the old plumbing exposed, its best to swap out the old cast iron piping with new PVC piping because cast iron connections often will leak after being disturbed, so to avoid future leaks under the tub, its a quick task to swap out the old cast iron plumbing with new pvc plumbing.
There are 4 main types of tubs:
Soaking tubs are tubs are tubs that don’t really have any special features. You fill them up, take a bath, drain them – and that’s about all there is to a soaking tub. When most people talk about a tub, a “soaking tub” is what they are talking about.
The terms “Jacuzzi tub” and “jetted tubs” mean the same thing – they are soaking tubs that have a pump that circulates (and sometimes heats) the water in the tub to shoot out through the jets in the tub, which makes them essentially a mini hot-tub.
Freestanding tubs are tubs that are not attached to a wall. Pretty much all freestanding tubs are also soaking tubs, and some freestanding tubs are also jacuzzi tubs. In recent years freestanding tubs have become more popular.
Walk in tubs are taller, have a bench seat and have a door that opens to walk into the tub. Then you sit on the bench, close the door, and turn the water on to fill the tub. Many walk in tubs also have an extendable shower nozzle. These are often called ADA accessible tubs.

There are 2 main types of shower surrounds: 1) tile surrounds, and 2) premade panel shower surrounds. Tile surrounds are made from a tile installer cutting and placing tile to fit the exact dimensions of your shower. Premade panel surrounds are surrounds that are premade, and thus the team installing your new shower, has to build the shower to fit the dimensions of the premade shower surround.
With a custom tile suround, we can build a shower of any size and shape. A tile surround is the majority of what we install for a bathroom remodeling project, and is just a little more expensive than a premade panel surround.
With a premade panel shower surround, your shower needs to be the dimensions of the panel kit. Most smaller shower enclosure areas, such as bump-outs that fit a tub, can be a great fit for a premade panel surround
Vanities are either single or double vanities. A single vanity is a vanity that has an area for only one person to get ready, and a double vanity has space for two people to get ready. A single vanity has one sink, and a double vanity has two sinks. For a master bathroom, and for shared bathrooms, if you have room for a doouble vanity, then a double vanity is the best way to go.
Single vanities are best defined as vanities that have one area where someone can get ready in the morning, and has one sink
Double vanities are best defined as vanities that have two areas where two people can get ready in the morning, and has two sinks.

The 4 main types of bathroom counter tops, ranked my most expensive to least expensive are: 1) marble, 2) quartz, 3) granite, 4) Porcelain, 5) Quartzite, 6) Corian, 7) laminate.
Marble has a depth and luminosity that manufactured surfaces just can’t match. Quartz — Engineered stone that’s non-porous, incredibly durable, and requires virtually no maintenance. It comes in a wide range of colors and patterns that can mimic marble beautifully. Great choice for busy families or anyone who doesn’t want to think about sealing. Granite — A natural stone like marble, but harder and more resistant to scratching and etching. Each slab is unique, and it offers a more dramatic, high-contrast look. Still needs periodic sealing, but holds up very well in daily use. Porcelain Slabs — A newer option that’s gaining serious popularity. Ultra-thin, incredibly tough, and available in marble-look finishes that are remarkably convincing. No sealing required and highly resistant to heat and moisture. Quartzite — Often confused with quartz, this is actually a natural stone that’s harder than marble and can achieve a very similar aesthetic. A fantastic middle-ground option for those who love the marble look with a bit more durability.

The main thing to know about toilets is that 1) cheap toilets have little flushing power, which can making needing to use a plunger a regular event (and NO ONE wants that!), 2) slightly more expensive toilets have good flushing power, 3) standard toilets are generally shorter, which makes comfort height toilets the most common choice, 4) bidet seats, although a new idea to many people, can be a luxury you never knew you needed, and 5) if you really need some flushing power, then pressure assisted toilets can be a good fit.
Standard toilets are generally the shorter toilets, in the 14-15 inch of height range. Most newer homes come with comfort height toilets, but if you are shorter, or have small kids, then a standard size toilet may be your best fit.
Comfort height toilets are toilets that are taller than standard toilets. For most people in America, a comfort height toilet is a better fit that the height of a standard toilet. These toilets are in the height range of 17-19 inches.
The thought of a bidet seat often makes people chuckle, but what we hear from our customers is that once you get used to a bidet toilet, that there is no going back. Bidets have controllers that adjust toilet seat temperature and water spray patterns.
If you currently deal with needing to plung a toilet often, then a pressure assisted toilet can be a great fit. The below toilet tank image on the left is a standard toilet that flushes by a flapper releasing water, and the image on the right shows a pressure assisted toilet tank.

One luxury item to a bathroom remodel project you must consider is a heated floor. A heated floor is one of those things that you never knew you had to have, until you have one. The feeling of warm tile when stepping out of the shower is a luxury feeling that never gets old.
One thing I like to do is add a timer to the flooring so that it turns on by itself shortly before your morning bathroom routine, and the feeling of the warm floor is something you look forward to getting out of bed for
